EDM has been in existence since 1993. Originally developed for use in AutoCAD environments, EDM V1.0 ran inside of AutoCAD R12 & 13 for DOS. Since it was an AutoCAD application, it was limited to use with AutoCAD only. At the request of EDM customers we decided EDM needed to work for more than just AutoCAD files, and we introduced EDM for Windows.

EDM is server independent and has been extensively tested and developed for use with Novell NetWare, Linux, and Windows NT Server. This new version offers document management for virtually any type of application project files. Many enhancements have been added to this new version including: Data archival management, enhanced administration tools, multiple project database support, and the ability to access multiple databases over a Wide-Area Network or Virtual Private Network.

SpireTech's EDM 32 2.7 for Windows offers a low cost solution for document management. EDM is based on a Check-In/Out methodology. The user checks out project related files from the network file server and then works on them from their local hard drive. This offers advantages over traditional network editing methods by increasing the access speed since the file is accessed locally, especially over slow WAN or VPN links. Copying the project files to a local drive for editing also offers an additional level of backup. If a server crash occurs the users are still able to work on files that have been checked-Out, thus reducing the cost of server downtime. EDM also offers Archive tracking. This helps the Systems Administrator to free up valuable server mass storage by moving completed projects off to secondary storage.
