The design of the Option-6
Speed (fig.2) conversion takes a number of factors into
consideration. Primary in its design is the final cost. The utilization
of existing VW transaxle parts reduces the cost while expanding the number
of gear ratio choices unavailable. Any pinion shaft or mainshaft that is
020 compatible can be used in conjunction with the Option-6 kit. The fifth
and sixth gear sets are modified as part of the conversion cost by us.
The two gear sets may be supplied by the customer
(any 020 5th -.71, .75, .80, .85, .89, .91, 1.05).
If one or both sets are supplied by V.L. Enterprises, they will be charged
in addition to the kit price.
The Option-6 upgrade will cause the 020 transaxle
to increase in length only 1.6 inches, or approximately 40mm. Excessive
transaxle length can interfere with the movement of the left wheel.
In order to reduce the length to a minimum, V.L. Enterprises designed a
unique
mainshaft
extension (fig.3). The patent pending design places the stock VW throw-out
bearing inside the mainshaft extension rather than
after the extension. This significantly
reduces the overall length.
