Fire in a trash dumpster located in the parking lot caused damage to the electrical system which controls our generators.  Core electrical and network connectivity remained up during the fire. Repairs needed to address all damage are underway. We will post additional information on our blog as it becomes available. If you have any questions or issues with regard to Wednesday night’s outage please get in touch.  A big thanks to the Portland Fire Department for their fast, professional and efficient work to keep our people and property safe.  Also a big thanks to our electrical contractors who immediately came out to make repairs.  And, of course, thanks very much to all of our customers as well for their understanding and support.

Microsoft Partner Signature Support provides partners with support to help keep their customers’ services operating smoothly. Signature Support handles technical support scenarios for Microsoft Office 365, Microsoft Dynamics CRM Online, and Microsoft Azure. This means that if you ever need help with your office products, such as a Hybrid Exchange server, or Sharepoint Online site we have Microsoft Partner Signature Support backing us up.

Microsoft SMB Cloud Competency

Wrapping up 2016 and our plans moving into 2017

2016 was another year of double-digit growth at SpireTech!  I’d like to thank our employees and clients for making it possible.

Here are some highlights of our major accomplishments in 2016:

  • Our “VIP support” and Managed services business grew 48% last year, mostly by word of mouth and your referrals! We do very little advertising, so your referrals are much appreciated – thank you!
  • We formalized business processes around our vCIO (Virtual Chief Information Officer) services to manage growth in this area.
  • We grew our cloud services, such as CTERA servers and Virtual private server hosting, 50% last year.
  • Our Office 365 CSP services grew more than everything else in terms of percentages.  (I’m still kicking myself for not buying MSFT stock last year).  It’s still a low-margin business though, so we’re offering this in conjunction with other services.
  • We added some key staff on the business side, as well as additional skilled technicians.

As SpireTech’s customer base has expanded, we have done the same to continue to provide the same high level of customer support while keeping your wait times low.  Most recently we added Brian Ellis to our staff of support technicians.

We are excited to welcome Brian, who has relocated from Chicago, IL to Portland, OR as he joins the team at SpireTech to continue his career journey and providing exemplary IT services.

Brian brings  15+ years of knowledge and experience working for internet service providers, handling remote and onsite helpdesk clients, providing managed services and IT consulting to businesses.  Additionally, as a former business owner he not only focuses on clients’ immediate IT needs, but helps consider overall IT strategy from an ownership perspective.

In his personal time Brian enjoys outdoor activities, photography, and is currently learning how to play the guitar.

IMG_6042At Spire, we’re constantly on the lookout for new technology that gives us or our clients the competitive edge.  While we don’t want to be bleeding edge, we do want to be ahead of the mainstream. We take vendor and technology selection very seriously, and only a few carefully chosen ones make the cut.

Why are we telling our clients this?  We want you to know we aren’t sitting around waiting for technology to pass us by.  Investing the time and money to attend conferences like HostingCon regularly is an important part of keeping up with the fast pace of change in our industry.

Many Managed Service providers (MSP’s) are attempting to get into the hosting business, and many Hosting/Cloud companies are trying to enter the managed services space.  The lines are getting blurred as technology converges into more “as a service” and cloud.  We’re already there, and have been for many years – and while our competitors are trying to figure it out, we’ve already got a solid foundation to build upon.  Read more...

Changes in the market and technology

We have decided to (mostly) stop providing residential DSL services in the Centurylink service area.  DSL internet has been a shrinking part of our business for some time, and now represents less than 4% of our services revenue.  Independent ISP’s like SpireTech have faced increasing competitive pressures from larger companies that want to own the connection to your home.  A few key contributing factors to our decision are as follows:

  1. In August 2015, Centurylink stopped allowing third party Internet Service Providers (ISP’s) to easily sign up new DSL customers via a website. The new process requires calling in with the customer on hold for 30 minutes or more, which isn’t fun for anyone.
  2. Centurylink and Frontier do not provide 3rd party ISP’s access to their faster fiber network. Our customers are limited to copper circuits, which max out at 7mb/sec. Furthermore, “spectral interference” from the Centurylink fiber network often interferes with copper DSL loops which has forced some affected clients to leave.
